Oh!! This Night...

Summer moon...

Lying on the cold sheets
Gazing at the stars
I would often fall asleep
Forgetting you
O summer moon
You still shone
At the window
And spread over
My threshold
Your sequined smile

Autumnal wind...

Did you take away
My dear friend
I had carried her back home
On chariots of chrome
She had winked at me
And promised to be mine
Forever
Where does she hide now?
Beneath the caper of the clouds
Darkening deeper my nights

Oh! That frozen smile

I guess winter has arrived
You have lost your sheen a little
Your shine sends chill down my spine
Your bleak visage soothe
My fluttering heart no longer
O ice maiden
Where are the nights warmer ?

Aah spring...

You bring back intoxicating dreams
Your breeze sprays fragrances
Of delight...your blooms are
Ever so bright
The days are sunny and cheerful
The nights have that devilish charm

I know you are no longer mine
Yet I crave for your beatific smile
O spring moon
You have always been my muse
And shall forever remain mine

Celebration

Sky afar
Stars glitter
Moon smiles
The night is young
Visions emerge
Dancing waves
Reaches and recedes
Evening song
Croons the breeze
Warming my heart
Melody divine
Destiny adorns
A nebulous haze
Labyrinthine maze
In vain I seek
The path beyond
But will l stall?
Or hesitate?
To surge ahead
In quest forlorn?
Not till my soul
Satiated rests
In bliss sublime
In bond ever strong
Hope is my torch
I lift ablaze
Grit is my arm
Wrapped along
Hold my hand
Despair I lest
Hold me tight
In embrace strong
Stars shall swoon and;
Fall at our feet
Moon shall glow
All day long
We shall then
March in tune
Hug in delight
The horizon beyond
Sun shine then shall
Never elope and
The nights shall
Stay forever young

Song Of Stars

Oh my alien star !!
On your nocturnal sojourn
 I await by my attic
For your twilight lore
Of fables born

As the veil of dusk
Descends, I hide your tale
Within my soul

Oh my sleepless star!!
From faraway heathen land
I fear not to intersect
Your trajectory night long

The distant sky beckons
With an ethereal kiss of
Light, I'd rather travel without
The ugly remnants of my life

Oh my poor, humble star!!
Listen to my plea
In your hurried flight of fancy
You may somewhere miss me

Dusty is my abode
Unblemished are your feet
I revere your ascent
But fail to reach thee

A favour I ask of you
When the time comes to flee
As I close in my lashes
You be what no one has ever been

(Inspired by the song "Bhindeshi Tara" from the Bengali movie "Antaheen", a classic in its own right)

Sitting By The Window

Dawn tiptoes stealthily
Towards my window
The dark silhouettes
Enlighten slowly
In the purity of light
A car washer cleaning cars
A milkman cycling past
With clanging containers of milk
I too have to take to the sleepy roads
As my pet Mr. Snow Boot nudges me
With soft growls
The day's begun
No more sitting by the window...

Glorious morn seeps in unstoppably
Under a glowering sun
The street lights burn
With a weak zeal
The usual noises of work
The honking of horns
The busy strides of passers by....

As the afternoon draws close
Shadows of the trees lengthen
On my veranda
A pale good bye ensues
Its the parting time...

The sun tilts westward
Leaving behind a trail
Of riotous red, purple, soft pink
Orange mixed with black and blue
A wistful end to day's delight...

The night comes in with bold steps
Sprinkling a few stars on the way
A doting moon with a motherly smile
The neons and the sparkles of the sky
Vie with each other
For supremacy...

Tomorrow at predawn
I shall again sit by the window
To witness the interplay
Of darkness and splendour...

Till then...

The Unseen

The silence of the night
The droplets of rain
Dripping from the leaves
The moon feels shy
Hides behind a cloud
A dog whines somewhere
At the end of the alley
A car passes by
Its headlights throwing
A weak patch of light
On the pitch dark roads
Long way to go till
The arrival of dawn
I sit in my lawn
Encircling a white bungalow
Now stilled in slumber
Everyone's gone to bed
Only I am alone, awake
A drape on a window
Shivers in the soft breeze
And an owl wails
Plaintively on the old, Peepal tree
I clutch the white shawl
And let my mane slide down
My fragile boned back
A song comes to mind
Heard ages ago
I hum with a smile
A bleak light burns
In the hut further down
By the running stream
I tread thither along
Somebody passes by
An old hunched man
Stooped on a stick
Chanting the holy name
I swoosh by like the
Flowing, whispering wind
On invisible wings
Leaving a thin trace
Of mist behind
A swish of silk
And the holy chant
Echo in the green

Valley beyond...
